How cogeneration works

Two forms of energy from a single fuel

Natural gas drives a generator that produces electricity on your site. Cogeneration captures the generator’s exhaust heat, which would otherwise be wasted, and puts it to work heating water and buildings, making steam, or running absorption chillers for cooling.

Because one fuel does two jobs, you buy less energy overall.

Conventional: utility power plus an on-site boiler

Two fuel sources, one for electricity and one for heat.

Cogeneration

One fuel source produces both electricity and usable heat.

Why it pays

The benefits of on-site power

Lower operating costs

Generate power for a fraction of utility rates and keep natural gas price inflation under control.

Energy security

Keep running through utility outages, with power that switches sources without a flicker.

Flexible financing

Cash, lease purchase, or a power purchase agreement that requires no money out of pocket.

Lower emissions

Burn less fuel for the same energy, with CARB-certified equipment and a smaller carbon footprint.

An active asset

Unlike standby diesel generators, cogeneration runs every day and pays for itself.

One turnkey contract

Design, engineering, financing, construction and ongoing service from a single provider.

Getting started

Three steps to your solution

The first two steps are complimentary. You see the numbers before you commit to anything.

1. Energy report

We analyze a full year of your energy use in 15-minute increments and review the potential savings with your team.

2. Site evaluation

We visit your facility, review the existing infrastructure, and select equipment and a location for it.

3. Proposal

You receive a proposal with final cost, financing options and schedule for review and approval.

Raley's grocery store
Case study: grocery

Raley’s replaced aging cogeneration at two stores with no money down

Raley’s stores need electricity, heating, cooling and refrigeration around the clock. Two stores had obsolete cogeneration systems. In 2011 Raley’s engaged ESD to design, deliver and commission a replacement 200 kW natural gas microturbine cogeneration system at each store.

65%of each store’s power now generated on site
$0out of pocket, through a power purchase agreement
$1.7M to $2.5Mprojected savings over 15 years
200 kWmicroturbine system per store

Each store also gained more reliable power and lower CO2 emissions, and uses PG&E power only for the remaining need.

What our clients say

Your company enabled our district to achieve a substantial energy savings with a mere contractual switch of Natural Gas service from PG&E to your company. I am doubly appreciative for such a simple solution, since conservation efforts are often labor intensive and/or require construction.

We hold ESD in very high regard and would highly recommend any owner considering a CHP based micro-grid system to entrust ESD with the design and successful execution of the project.
